Everything Perfect in its Kind At the Table

“SS: It is the ancestors. It is the dead. This is no mere metaphor. This is no cipher for the unconscious or something like that. When he talks about the dead he means the dead. And they’re present in images. They still live on.”

I have shown my art at small galleries before. A touch base with realities. My publications too. I even had a Creative Anarchist of America and fanzine day. A long expansion of years. As I get older, I feel a need to be in contact with other artists and the community.

Today I was out with the cats. There usual morning romps. Dragonflies are heralding autumn and something unusual too. We have a dwarf lemon tree given to us by my dad years ago. It is about five feet tall now. Lemons galore. I looked up to seeing more than a dozen little songbirds come to perch and be on the lemon tree’s branches. Filled it was.

Took me back to a similar experience at a place where I took my young son for his swims in Calabasas. This happened there too. I was sitting reading from my laptop. And then almost like a bright light, the tree filled with little songbirds.

I thought to myself,

“Is anyone else seeing this?”

And I looked down and the whole thing was gone. Just like today.

Back around the tree and swimming team with son I was reading Lament of the Dead Psychology after Jung’s Red Book. James Hillman & Sonu Shamdasani when the experience happened.

Today I saw them songbirds fill the tree. And never did they fly away to another place they were just gone.

“Everything perfect in its kind has to transcend its own kind, it must become something different and incomparable. In some notes the nightingale is still a bird; then it rises above its class and seems to suggest to every winged creature what singing is truly like.”

This is an introduction to the event I have art in. I went to a reception, and I did not know what to expect. Some events you can hear a pin drop. Another subtle voice is heard or friends come to visit. Or when shows where bands are playing just for bands.

This area is depressed on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. More lor less a motif of our city’s economy today.

Large buildings are available for lease or sale, with excellent parking on Saturdays after 4 PM when it is free.

Across the street we saw a Spirit Halloween store where a Smart and Final once was. We did visit after the event. A little side kick of merriment with monsters. Ghosts and ancestors from Halloween larking about.

We walked up to the tag gallery and were greeted. That was nice. We were told things about the exhibitions in the gallery at the time.

The door was open and I heard voices. Like the sound of songbirds so many. I have not heard that many human voices in a long time. My stomach turned and like a songbird frightened I wanted to fly away. Yet we walked through the door, crossed the threshold, and went to have a new art gallery experience.

I met the President and we exchanged greetings.

“Hello.”

“Hello.” She spoke.

“I said here I am one of the artists tonight and told her my name.”

“Hudley Flipside. I was wondering about you. Who is a Hudley Flipside?”

We both laughed and then I said,

“That is my writer’s name. I am just a normal Holly Cornell.”

“You need to go to the front and get your Artist’s Badge.”

We talked about some things, and I went to get one.

Then we melted into the event and rode the wave of people. Having to go outside to get away from the loudness.

The president and others went up before the guest and talked. This is charming. Talking through the talking humans but I listened closely with delight.

“Perhaps truth is a woman who has reasons for not showing her reasons? … Perhaps her name, in Greek, is Baubo?”

I will be back later for the Artist talk in a few weeks and see what happens.

“SS: Well, some. Zarathustra is there. Nietzsche is there. Goethe is there. SO, in some instances, you have this reverberation of this specific legacy thinkers. “
