Small Books

I am much better at taking criticism now than I was when I was in my twenties, a time when every piece of feedback felt like a personal attack. My worst critique is still my own mind, always analyzing and second-guessing my decisions.

As I reflect on my journey, my goal as a self-publisher is to forget about the notion that some other publisher is going to do the hard work for me or make the process easier.

I sometimes lull into that trap, fantasizing about the ease that traditional publishing might bring, but I realize that true fulfillment comes from embracing my independence and creativity. My goal is to be able to continue to do it my way, crafting my narratives and connecting with my audience on my own terms, while recognizing that every piece of feedback is an opportunity to grow rather than a source of self-doubt.

I would like to eventually print up, made from recyclable material,  small books. Hand-held books. Some hand-held hard cover books some not. I love small books. They are interesting to me.

“A chapbook is a type of popular literature printed in early modern Europe. Produced cheaply, chapbooks were commonly small, paper-covered booklets, usually printed on a single sheet folded into books of 8, 12, 16 and 24 pages.

They were often illustrated with crude woodcuts, which sometimes bore no relation to the text. When illustrations were included in chapbooks, they were considered popular prints.

“The tradition of chapbooks arose in the 16th century, as soon as printed books became affordable, and rose to its height during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many different kinds of ephemera and popular or folk literature were published as chapbooks, such as almanacs, children’s literature, folk tales, ballads, nursery rhymes, pamphlets, poetry, and political and religious tracts.

The term “chapbook” for this type of literature was coined in the 19th century. The corresponding French and German terms are bibliothèque bleue (blue book) and Volksbuch, respectively. In Spain they were known as pliegos de cordel. The term “chapbook” is also in use for present-day publications, commonly short, inexpensive booklets.”

Summer Poem # 1

My oasis
And cave.

Not reaching out
But reaching within.

Agathos daimon holds my heart
Humidity holds me back.

“Coninuctio” “in mercurio”
Planting seeds
Which do not ripen.

Outside my oasis
Seeds dry in the heat.

Inside the cave
I listen to Mercurius speak.

“The desires of the mind
Will take you nowhere.”

Spiritual and Musical Discernment.

It was a freeing time of spiritual and musical discernment. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club helped me through a rough time of heavy discernment. The magic of a great band.

I was going to university at Los Angeles Mount Saint Mary’s college. I attended 2004 to 2007. I enjoyed all the courses I enrolled in.

I left because the curriculum started to sway a bit off its ecumenical track. There was a kind of pressure starting to form about preferences over whether one was a catholic or not.

I became extraordinarily strong in my inter-religious perspective. I love studying history, culture, myths, and humanity. I was getting awfully close to finishing the master’s program. One course forced me to make a moral decision to leave the program.

I was on a remarkably interesting course on spiritual discernment. The course was taught by a sister / Nun who was rather old and taught the course more like a high school course than a master’s course.

I liked her, and she seemed filled with integrity until our confrontation about child abuse.

Currently, it was in all the news. The Los Angeles Sex Abuse cases. It was very troubling for me to behold.

My Two sons were 5 and 13. We were not attending the Catholic Church, but I was still incredibly angry.

The Sister said to the class that all of this “child abuse” will make the Church more authentic. I stood up and said,

“…but Sister one child is too many, how can this be?”

Sister looked at me and said,

“That is, your opinion!”

Overwhelmed, I finished the course. Heart-broken I left altogether.

In 2007 I read this in the news,” Catholic Church Settles Los Angeles Sex Abuse Cases for $660 Million.”

Shocked but I knew then that what I was feeling was my own spiritual discernment. Mine was right on.

I desired to become a chaplain and provide assistance to individuals without regard to their age, gender, or beliefs.

Yet, there is one thing that is unacceptable. I am glad I left the program.

At the end of the semester, I left the university and went to my first music event in a long time.

I attended the Wiltern Theater to see the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. My hair was the color red and down to my butt.

I was on a new path again. I never went back to the Wiltern, but I did revisit lots of bands and shows since then.

Two old couches…

Life is about change. Old things die away, new things break into the world. I just wanted to hold on to this memory of two family couches that we got as hand me downs from Marge and Fred. Thank you, we love you and you are both still in our memories.

Neighbors’ blooms under California rain 2018

It was about 11 years ago when Marge passed away, it was on the day of the Mardi Gras. Her things ended up being sold and given away. We were given one of her many couches. A rustic beige couch with embroidery running all over it and white lines moving over it. I sat on it a few times at her home in Tarzana California. She lived in the hills next to Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Gazebo where the character Tarzan was created. There was a time when the hills of the San Fernando Valley were once sparsely populated. One might reflect upon nature and come up with all kind of stories to tell.

The couch was originally bought for a trailer. Marge was then married to Fred Ahern. He was an American filmmaker and worked with Alfred Hitchcock and Quinn Martin.  Fred and Marge originally purchased two couches for a trailer in the desert. Bullhead city Arizona. Marge did not like living there so they moved it back to the home in the Tarzana hills. They were both my husband’s grandparents. Marge was his maternal grandmother. She married Fred after my husband was born. He remembers when they purchased the two couches.

Fred was a good man and always treated my husband as his own grandson. Today we are letting go of the hand me down couches. The couches supported our two sons and us for about 11 years. Fun years. Colorful years with a room full of young boys, gamers, and sleepovers. The couch has been a good best friend. I say couch but there are two. A long couch and a love seat couch.

When we first put the couches in our home they smelled dusty. Now they are covered with hippy colored blankets, my mom’s knit and crocheted blankets and a hand full of cats, books, and laptops. Right now, youngest son is asleep upon the love seat. I think he is feeling a need to be close to it now. It will be gone soon.  He does not usually sleep on it like this.

Today is the day we will put the couches outside for bulky item pick up. I never meet Fred but somehow, he has been close to us the last few years by way of a couch he purchased. I think my husband feels a closeness to the couches. It is not until this morning that I realized this. The sadness and grief of loss is always a sober wake-up call… yes always. Two couches are a connection to my husband’s past. It holds memories and moments before I entered his world.

We purchased two new couches last week. Today is delivery day.  Marge and Fred’s couches are going away forever. The couches will be rained upon today.

We named our first son partly after Fred. When the hospital nurse handed me a document to sign for his birth certificate, I surprised my husband by sneaking in the Fred in Johnfred. I was completely in a ‘after giving birth’ trance I guess. I am glad I did it!

Football kitty is not letting go of her couch as a little Bodhisattva might naturally do!?

This is who I am. An Artist’s CV

Reflecting over the last six years and after 1,000 posts I have come to realize what The Seminary of Praying Mantis is all about. I can break my blog into four parts; Humor, spirituality, punk rock, and free fall.

001

I do embrace the creative shadow archetype. I like to make humor of culture and politics. For me it is the third path of satire. I do not shy off from it being considered stupid.

I am naturally a spiritual person. I have become more comfortable with sharing this about myself. My favorite books are biographies. So why not share my story.

Punk Rock has cursed me. When I try to escape it, it always finds me. So, I now embrace it as part of my rebellious character. I love to share my history and stay current as shown in my ‘do it yourself ‘ projects.

I like intimacy. friendships and the integrity that comes with the core punk rock experience. I don’t do the festival punk thing.

That is way more profitable for the bands. I can dig that. If one of the many bands, I’ve known.  wants to take one of my Punk@lullaby journals and help promote my work that is cool by me. Kind of like we use to do for them with Los Angeles Flipside Fanzine.

Flyer for Hudley Talks copy

My free fall is a merger of all the three parts including my art and poetry. I must create. It is a calling that I cannot ignore. I promote my own work and have true friends help me along the way.

Now to move on to a current event. I like reading Steve Forests’ writings on astrology. His latest post is on Mars, Mars out of bounds !!

You may not believe in the stars but even if you don’t he takes an honest look at what it is to be a male or female this month. A very good read.

Androgyny or the hermaphrodite archetype is part of my perspective on what it is to be a human being.  Honesty and integrity are how I frame my world. It sometimes leads me down a confronting and angry dark path. Yet at age 60 I think I can be of service to others by doing my good work. I am walking a new path back to university.

I am interested on where this will take me. Will I be accepted for who I am?  I want to help others. I may become distant here blogging?  I may change my posts favoring one over the other? I will be more discerningly present !

Therefore, I am sharing the insides of my Flopside comic here. It makes me laugh. Hopefully bringing some adult toilet paper humor upon a heartless subject in current politics. The original Flopside Bubble Gum comic was published as Mr. Trump grappled  a hostile takeover of our poor whimpering white house. How it has changed!!

slid down for kicks

~Hunter S. Thompson

I learned to accept the major changes in my hometown!

The food mall galore stands where I once played miniature golf!

The humongous blue slide where we slid down for kicks is gone too!

It is invisible now! Instead, my mind now views the Chinese sushi restaurant where I sit with my kids!

Maybe the place where wild animals once gathered!  Gathering years before us!

Underneath lies the multilayered changing earth, holding lots of fossils and maybe our cherished lizard people!

ghoulish time

  • Ghoulish is one who delights in the revolting, morbid, or loathsome.

Today is a day of terror and disdain in New York. Another violent attack on innocent people. The last month or so has been very revolting, morbid and loathsome. An attack on the soul of humanity…very sad.

I am not one who delights in the revolting, morbid or loathsome. Halloween is about running around and getting free candy. It is a time of parties with friends and family. The graceful time of honoring our ancestors.

Spirits ascend but come to visit us in the wind and in our hearts and our memories.

My cave is safe and warm with love.

A love song for all of us… what a ghoulish time.

An unrecognized alien

You’ll have to get out of these little boxes, you know, physics on my left and psychology on my right, you can’t do that, you cannot do that in dealing with UFOs. What I’m saying is you cannot do that anymore in dealing with astrophysics. The problem that scientists have today is that time and space, the way we were thinking about them, don’t make sense when you begin to deal with particle entanglement and with entanglement of larger physical things. So we’re going to get to the same place eventually.

Dr. Jacques Vallée

Page 88 The SacriDcal Murder Carl Jung “Red Book” – Carl Gustav Jung / The Red Book

“But the way is my own self, my own life founded upon myself. The God wants my life. He wants to go with me, sit at the table with me, work with me. Above all he wanted to be ever-present. But I’m ashamed of my God. I don’t want to be divine but reasonable. The divine appears to me as irrational craziness. I hate it as an absurd disturbance of my meaningful human activity. It seems an unbecoming sickness which has stolen into the regular course of my life. Yes, I even find the divine superfluous.” Jung 78/98

I have not done this for a while. To randomly pick a book and open the page and read a paragraph. It is a type of trance effort. Some of the worst and best loved characters that I have read or studied live in a kind of trance world. A place of myth, magic and raised consciousness. William Blake, Carl Jung, and the pitiful creature known as Adolf Hitler. I am studying Hitler’s biography now. I was amazed how his and their lives moved in the same worlds.

The place of science, math and technology works in our modern age. The world of Blake, Jung and Hitler are different. One cannot superimpose our current world upon theirs. Which leads me to the randomly picked book and paragraph today.

Blake is a marvelous visionary and artist. He inspires humanity to think and brings beauty in reach of our grasp. Jung heals humanity with his depth psychology.

Hitler inverts compassion and goodness. He shows us what the worst part of human nature is.

They all use their unique wills to inspire or destroy.

Blake and Jung show us that humanity is a wondrous reality. They have dived into their unconscious and show us luminous stars and a good conscience.

We find our history and our future with inspired foresight; what it is to do good for humanity. Blake keeps the best and the worst at bay while focusing his will to ascend to transcendence.

Hitler did this too. To understand him, his world, one becomes aware of a trance of darkness; he is a mythologist of national German superhuman qualities…of what it is to be demonically insane! He is without a touch of the human soul or spirit! No sparks make him human. Hitler is the trance of a monster! How can anyone in their right mind address such a hideous freak as him with a salute?

William Blake ~ Europe, A Prophecy 8

“It is one of the wonders of human existence that a person can live a long and happy life without once becoming aware of the reality of consciousness and its ability to transcend the immediate physical level. At the instant of death, will time suspend its rule long enough for such people to realize what they missed?”

~ Pg. 153 Jacques Vallee, Confrontations; A scientist’s Search for Alien Contact.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is forbidden-science-volume-two-revised-jacques-vallee-9780578032313.jpg

I love Vallee. He is the scientist that places himself in the world of myth, magic and raised consciousness! He does not ignore art or music either. He rings the heart of a compassion that wants to know. He transcends a nationalist myth blending with Blake’s “universal humanity,” or Jung’s “collective unconscious.”

“In his late works, he embodied these and other ills in the nightmare ridden figure of the cosmic giant Albion, or universal humanity, who has fallen into deadly sleep of mundane existence. In humanity’s coma, the divine is a remote and forbidding sky-god: nature a sterile heap of atoms, lovers and family members, enemies; and one’s own innermost being, an unrecognized alien.”

Great Grandfather..

My great-grandfather left my family a little gift. While looking for birth certificates and my marriage license, I came upon a little book. Cappen Jan Jake; A Cornish Tale.

My mom did not share much information about her family. In her last years she did seem to show interest in finding out more about her family. Today a little book that my great-grandfather wrote and published found me again. An extraordinary experience for me.

I went to Ancestry.com and added William Howard Watson to my family tree. The little green leaves are multiplying with glory. I am happy to know that my great-grandfather was a writer, curious and printed these little story books. I think we would have gotten along very well.

My next publishing venture is to republish his little book. I have all I need to do this. It is a perfect little book, and it is how I would have done it too. Simply perfect. I am delighted as can be.

A share or portion

Today I will snack on black beans. Cooked up with fresh Anaheim green peppers and onions. Also some fresh cabbage with olive oil , honey and hot sauce.  Alongside  this are small sweet potatoes baked with honey, salt & pepper and Mrs. Dash’s lemon hot  spice.

Reflecting this summer in my cave I am researching and thinking about everything. I have my products for sale and I have many articles, music and many offers for free. It is a good time in my life.

One of the lovely muses to inspire us all… we may snack on for inspiration, image by Hudley

I also snack on learning things. I focus on politicians, artists and astrology.  I snack on Facebook and  WordPress. I go outside and I snack on the beauty of nature. A share, or portion, of my life I can see what my boys are up to or what the cats are doing. I snack on humor!

I snack on foresight and inspirations of what my fruitful future might be. I also snack on good films and the news. I snack on my career and homemaking skills.

I will avoid unhealthy snacks today of all kinds. Yet, sometimes they are too damn fun to ignore.

Today I was reading my weekly astrological update! It seems the world powers are continuing their power games! As an individual I feel karma pressure personally!
Today I saw a monarch butterfly riding through the air in my backyard. Took my mind back to Pacific Grove California. The festival of the Monarchs is celebrated there every year!  I love the ocean and coastal region there. Where the ocean, hills and streams meet.
I am going to keep lite on my feet the next few months. Like the monarch butterfly! Grateful for the good things in life and contradicting, at least trying to, the power drama and political drama! The heat burns like a purifying sweat lodge!

POTENTIAL QUESTIONS THE BUTTERFLY ASKS What is your attitude towards change? How does that influence your life? Can you accept who and where you are? If not, do you believe you can change it? If so, how will you react to the inevitable changes to come? Do you believe in your greater good? Can you allow good to flow naturally into your life? Are you willing to take the long soul’s journey to be the best you can be?

I focus on love and cling to the cool breeze of the monarch butterfly !

Controlling Improvising friends.

Improvising is having the ability to control one’s mind and think clearly. To speak from memory and experience within the presence of now and not get tongue-tied. I watch how some people are so good at this type of control. It amazes me. They can move their bodies, speak and improvise with a type of grace.

A controlling of the mind and the body with entertaining perfection.

It is not only about repetition and practice, though both matter. Taking tests and writing essays in class requires a similar kind of improvisational control. Some people are naturally good at it, while others develop it through practice and determination. That is a skill I would like to have.

I guess this is why I love Jazz. It is improvising control that is so perfect. A yearning for me…

“I stood for a moment on the scent, smelling this shrill and blood-raw music, sniffing the atmosphere of the hall angrily, and hankering after it a little too. One half of this music, the melody, was all pomade, sugar, and sentimentality. The other half was savage, temperamental, and vigorous. Yet the two went artlessly well together and made a whole.”

Making it happen…

Triangular poem…. by Hudley

The best I have achieved in life is to follow things through. It can be a project, a meeting or supporting a friend. I can follow through with a yes or a no.

This is a good feeling. I love to follow through with an event. Sometimes this means doing the laundry in one day. Gathering, washing, folding and putting everything away.

Going shopping, cooking and cleaning up. Having a dream and making it happen. These are the qualities that I am capable of. Many wonderful things that make life better.

Even in the face of diversity, steaming contraries, and politics. I have the capacity to live a decent life.

I walked around the city. I experienced the cold winds of youth. I had a cup of coffee. These are the freedoms I am capable of achieving now.

A happy spit in the wind

FLipside Fanzine

December 1979 is around 37 years ago. A very tight and small club of mutual fans, promoters and band members were a rebellious team.

Before Henry Rollins galore, when the underground punk scene was unique, new, and growing as wildfire. I swear our agenda was as sincere and planned as peeing on the walls.

I used to take a few photographs back in the day as the shift from Hollywood to Orange County became the thing like a large earthquake. Los Angeles Flipside Fanzine was there hanging with the scene. Drunk and wild as a windblown day.

I just signed an agreement to releases an image I took a long time ago about the punk scene for a film called “20th Century Women.”

The image is my intellectual property. Some day when, hopefully, my grand-kids or great grand kids are viewing this film they may take to heart what their “grand ma ma” did for an underground punk scene. It feels good to share history with a company that respects my rights.

They pursued me with respect and integrity. It feels particularly good in the scheme of my life. There are many stories from THE BIG PUNK ROCK, this is mine.

The photograph is of Black Flag at the Church with Keith Morris singing after they had officially broken up, a unique photograph is the photograph that I have licensed today.

It is not about the money, it is about how I am still amazed that anyone would care about a hot, sleazy, little underground church basement in some place called nowheresville some 37 years ago… because we knew at that time, at that time & place, that no one cared!
